The ROCK Linux project has been discontinued in 2010. Here are the old data for the historical record!

00:01 < alex-i> rxr: USA
00:02 < rxr> ah ok - so no article for you yet ...
00:02 < rxr> alex-i: I wrote the the linux journal two times already - and never got a reply ... :-(
00:03 < alex-i> rxr: I was away, sorry.
00:03 < alex-i> rxr: english LJ?
00:03 < alex-i> rxr: Actually, if it's online, then I could try google on it.
00:03 < alex-i> rxr: You have a url?
00:04 * rxr must write strangely today ... - everyone misunderstandws me
00:04 < rxr> alex-i: no - I meant I wrote to the LJ two times asking for the possiblity to get an article printer ...
00:05 < rxr> so there is none yet .. :-(
00:05 < alex-i> :(
00:06 < alex-i> Has anybody succeeded building rock with stack smashing?
00:06 < alex-i> protection...
00:07 < mnemoc> i guess the patch is a bit outdated
00:07 < alex-i> Looks like a bug...
00:12 < rxr> alex-i: I use it every now and then ... - but not in the last days ...
00:12 * rxr just Emerged bdb42 in the wrong rock source tree ...
00:13 < rxr> I guess an indication to crawl into bed ...
00:15 < mnemoc> yes :\
00:16 < valentin> gn8
00:17 < mnemoc> n8 valentin

00:19 < rxr> maybe we should not patch bdb* ad all
00:20 < rxr> just use the install wrapper to tranform the major ones on the fly to /tmp/ conditionally in the bdb_config.sh
00:20 < mnemoc> how whould you handle multiversions then?
00:20 < rxr> at all
00:20 < mnemoc> mmm
00:20 < rxr> or /dev/null if this work flawlessly
00:20 < mnemoc> libtools gets mad with install_wrapper
00:23 < rxr> hm?
00:23 < rxr> I mean to dispose the unwanted major and default libs
00:23 < rxr> not to keep them
00:23 < rxr> so either /tmp since they will not be archived - treates as temp files
00:24 < rxr> or /dev/null directly - if this works
00:24 < rxr> nothing to upset libtool
00:24 < mnemoc> iirc libtools tries to run ranlib after install
00:25 < rxr> aha ...
00:25 < rxr> I apply it as it is now - and then work on s.th. more state of the art the next days - maybe after 2.0.2 I want to push out tomorrow
00:25 < rxr> (and yes I know about the pending patch candidates ...)
00:27 < dsoul> :>
00:28 < mnemoc> rxr: will you apply it to 2.0 too?
00:31 < rxr> the .a fix - yes of course - it is a grave bug ...
00:32 < mnemoc> =)
00:33 < rxr> commited
00:33 < rxr> to 2.1
00:33 < rxr> 2.0 merge now
00:33 < mnemoc> i'll try to send an incremental patch for bdb patch later
00:33 < rxr> s/now/in proress now/
00:38 < rxr> mnemoc: ok 2.0 merged
00:38 < rxr> Committed revision 3386.
00:38 < rxr> so - I need sleep - n8 all - cu in the morning
00:39 < dsoul> bye rxr
00:39 < mnemoc> n8 & thanks rxr
00:40 < rxr> no problem - I hope it also works for you ...

00:45 < rxr> ^- 2.0 of course ...

00:46 < rxr> so looks quite ok - I guess better than 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 - but I have not done ref builds for 2.0 for some time - so I'm not 100% sure ...
00:46 < mnemoc> i'm using 2.0, but not a full 2.0
00:47 < rxr> I also use of course 2.0 - but I normally only build desktop
00:47 < rxr> recently I lack the time to do other fun builds ...

10:24 < rxr> cool!
10:45 < valentin> hi from LinuxTag.
10:48 < rxr> hi valentin
10:50 < rxr> the platform idependance of Java:
10:50 < rxr> One big problem was Eclipse had never been run on a 64-bit platform and it contained some code, specifically the interface between SWT, the graphics toolkit in Eclipse, and its native C libraries, that assumed 32-bit addresses. Aside from having to create a clean 64-bit version of SWT, we were faced with a more significant problem: no 64-bit Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for x86_64, AMD's 64-bit architecture, existed at the time, and it didn't look hopeful that one would be available before we had to ship.
10:50 < rxr> valentin: how is it over there?
10:50 < daja77> moin
10:51 < valentin> nice
10:57 < valentin> i convinced one guy to try rock on his iBook instead of gentoo

15:57 < fake> blindy? huh?
15:58 < fake> blindy: for fpu instructions gcc creates funtion calls
15:58 < fake> blindy: because some models have no fpu
15:58 < blindy> hmm
15:58 < blindy> no idea
15:58 < fake> blindy: the function can then code it's result without fpu operations
15:59 < fake> blindy: but when the CPU supports fpu operations, these functions generate the correct assembler code.

16:34 < fake> rxr: what is that cdb crap?
16:35 < fake> rxr: this is the worst compilation and makefile construction i have *ever* seen
16:35 < esden> fake: I think jdb should be killed for that?
16:35 < fake> rxr: compiling it by hanbd would be *MUCH* easier!!

16:38 < mnemoc> hi esden, Lorini
16:38 < daja77> esden: ?
16:39 < fake> rxr: compiling it's own 'install' program?
16:39 < rxr> fake: what are you talking about ?
16:39 < fake> rxr: how should the cross-built auto-str in mine/cdb ever run?
16:40 < mnemoc> outch
16:40 < rxr> fake: ah - you talk about mine,... ;-)
16:40 < rxr> yes - it is ugly - I also already commented about it ...
16:40 < fake> rxr: yes
16:40 < rxr> it works for some cross builds ...
16:41 < fake> rxr: we don't need the autostr stuff
16:41 < fake> rxr: it's only used in cdb's own installer, which we don't use (i hope)
16:41 < rxr> I do not know every source line of mine
16:41 < fake> neither do i
16:44 < fake> rxr: i'll rip out all the install stuff...

16:56 < fake> rxr: do i need to update the unused patchfile inside the package?
16:56 < rxr> the one in the tarball / SVN is already patched

18:24 * netrunner added pentium-m(e) support for gcc.
18:25 < mnemoc> oh
18:26 < netrunner> I compiled everything with p4 for my laptop and had to learn that it nmisses some instruction sets.
18:28 < mnemoc> .oO( something remembers me epia )o
18:30 < rxr> netrunner: what do you have pentium-m centrino stuff?
18:32 < netrunner> rxr: ibm x40
18:33 < netrunner> wasn't such a problem because most stuff doesn't use those extensions, but sdl stuffe parrachutes and glxgears came to my mind ...
18:33 < mnemoc> what instructions?
18:33 < mnemoc> s/what/which/
18:39 < netrunner> this patch adds support for pentium-m CPU (used by Centrino notebooks)
18:39 < netrunner> that is mostly like P3 but with SSE2 and new P4 with SSE3. Intel
18:39 < netrunner> marketing scheme is confusing enough to use same name for P4 and P4 with
18:39 < netrunner> SSE3 but they attach letter 'E' to the MHZ number, so I added it as
18:39 < netrunner> pentium4e.
18:40 < netrunner> (quote from where I got the patch)
18:43 < rxr> please stop throwing gcc patches into ROCK Linxu
18:43 < rxr> push them to the gcc people so they are in the next version
18:43 < rxr> but this epia target is already enough cruft
18:43 < netrunner> this is from gcc mailing list
18:43 < rxr> mnemoc: PLEASE push this stuff UPSTREAM
18:43 < rxr> then vote there that you want to see it included
18:44 < mnemoc> me? what stuff am i adding?
18:44 < rxr> mnemoc: tab typo
18:44 < mnemoc> :p
18:44 < netrunner> and the patch for epia was rejected with the statement that the cmov, which is defined optional, should be inevery hardware ignoring the fact that there could be one without.
18:44 < rxr> but I'll discard any other gcc bloat - when a new gcc version is out I just want to bump the version number and be finished - I'll not want to get thru ugly arch patches that add bloat
18:45 < rxr> and if this is just sse stuff (which you will not notice in real world performance anyway) you could jsut add it as this to our gcc-config:
18:46 < rxr> pentium4e -march=pentiumIII -msse2 or so
18:46 < netrunner> I do not think this is bloat but feature enhancement
18:50 * fake would love to send patches to e2fsprogs and util-linux upstream

18:53 < mnemoc> rxr: what do you mean? p3/p4 optimization differences is not significative?

19:21 < fake> hm... using 'ar', 'ranlib' and 'strip' without checking $AR, $RANLIB and $STRIP seems to be very common (ufortunately)
19:23 < mnemoc> maybe we should provide {ar,ranlib, strip} wrappers for packages calling them directly ($PATH dependant(
