[22:35] <hewhocutsdown> hello; have a question regarding ROCK linux if anyone is available
[22:35] <mnemoc> hewhocutsdown: just ask ,-)
[22:36] <hewhocutsdown> i just heard about it yesterday, been looking through the wiki to try and grasp it
[22:36] <hewhocutsdown> i had been using the Linux From Scratch project to create a very specialized form of linux for a project i'm working on
[22:37] <hewhocutsdown> but we're doing rebuilds and modifications, and it's getting to be a pain;
[22:37] <mnemoc> that's why most people start using RL :)
[22:37] <hewhocutsdown> I've been trying to figure out what it is we need, and came up with this; full control over what goes in (and out) of the OS, and ability to modify this.
[22:38] <hewhocutsdown> our project is very narrow in focus, so we're stripping out everything that isn't essential
[22:39] <hewhocutsdown> and I'm just trying to wrap my head around ROCK linux and understand where the benefits lie (especially compared to something like Linux From Scratch).
[22:41] <mnemoc> RL gives you the reproducibility, the multi-architecture support, basic package integratation, package updates, and the ability to improve that basic integration to fit your specific purpose
[22:42] <hewhocutsdown> the reproducibility is a huge thing for me
[22:42] <hewhocutsdown> and something that was not easily workable in LFS
[22:43] <mnemoc> LFS is great for learning
[22:43] <hewhocutsdown> we'll be working with a very narrow range of architectures, but yeah, that sounds like what we need.
[22:43] <hewhocutsdown> it is, it's fantastic for learning
[22:45] <hewhocutsdown> so i really want to be working with this then: http://www.rocklinux.org/wiki/Building
[22:45] <hewhocutsdown> building a distribution, very customized for my purposes then....i'll start reading and working on that
[22:50] <hewhocutsdown> thank you very much mnemoc...half of this was me articulating what I need so I understood it, more than a question per se.
[22:54] <mnemoc> you are welcome
[22:54] <mnemoc> and if you have questions, just greet, ask and be patient :)
[22:55] <mnemoc> the ML is also a good place
[23:13] Nick change: ija_ -> ija
[23:15] <hewhocutsdown> the ML? oh, mailing list
[23:16] <hewhocutsdown> i'll check it out
[23:16] <mnemoc> :)
