The goals of gxemul are to emulate MIPS-like CPUs and enough surrounding hardware to fake real machines, capable of running real (unmodified) operating systems (such as NetBSD, Linux, FreeBSD, or OpenBSD), and to assist in experimenting with MIPS in general.
