[12:38] < [anders]> okay, have had to go through and order some things for the box at home and the laptop.. :-/
[12:40] < [anders]> the powercut yesterday seems to have screwed up the network card in the PC so it doesn't send or receive any IP traffic.. on an ARP level it appears to be working and the Ethernet side of it works as mii-tool tells me it negotiated with the 8-port switch alright..
[12:41] < [anders]> and I also ordered a new HDD for the laptop and a USB2 enclosure for the old disk so I can slurp things of the old disk.. Which will be handy.. Later I can always use that disk for backups.. :)
[12:47] < [anders]> not a bad price for the USB2 disk enclosure.. £30+VAT..  so I guess around ¤50 or so.. Good price I thought..

[13:36] < armijn> praenti: what kind of system?
[13:37] < praenti> armijn: an own build 1.5.17. but i think i've a broken glibc
[13:37] < armijn> which architecture?
[13:37] < praenti> ia32 athlon
[13:38] < praenti> on huebis box there are no problems

[14:29] < [anders]> mmmm... getting a 6 or 12 month extension here at IBM.. (Hopefully 12 months).. Which is nice.. :)
[14:30] < [anders]> That means though I will still have as little time as ever to hack on Rock.. :-/
[14:31] < thalerim> huebi: about the jorunaling filesystems issue some days ago (or so): xfs, jfs, reiserfs - and probably every other than ext3 too - are _not_ able to recover a file in that was written and suddenly the power goes out (== crash), this file is *lost* then. This is because the used file operations aren't atomic or so. Just FYI.
[14:32] < [anders]> thalerim: I thought ext3 was capable of that.
[14:33] < thalerim> it is indeed
[14:33] < [anders]> thalerim: but if you enable that function, it will be incredibly slow..
[14:34] < thalerim> actually it's the default option
[14:34] < armijn> hmm
[14:34] < [anders]> thalerim: not to mention that if you use (e)ide backend storage your journaling doesn't guarantee file integrity anyway..
[14:34] < thalerim> [anders]: apply the HTree patch and see how ext3 burns all other filesystems away :-)
[14:34] < thalerim> BTW. ReiserFS v4 will have atomic file-operations
[14:35] < [anders]> thalerim: HTree patch? how about you put that in the 1.5.19 tree in the misc dir or something? :) So I get the patch when I next co the cvs tree.. ;-)
[14:35] < thalerim> in spite of this won't decrease the speed
[14:35] < [anders]> RFS v4 will have all sorts of goodies.. like pluggable crypto modules..
[14:36] < thalerim> [anders]: there was an HTree patch for an very early 2.4.x, now there're only recent patches for 2.5.x
[14:36] < [anders]> I was under the impression that ext3 only logged metadata in the journal per default.
[14:37] < [anders]> (much like JFS and XFS does things..)
[14:37] < thalerim> [anders]: i'll stay at ext3 though. HTree makes it really fast, and i like the compatibility and the additional attributes
[14:37]   [anders] been running RFS since 2.4.0-pre days and it hasn't eaten my box yet.. (touch wood)
[14:38] < [anders]> I even used RFS on SuSE 6.[1-3] and it worked fine for me then..
[14:39]   praenti wants UFS it has not journaling but soft-updates
[14:39] < praenti> yesterday i've read an article in IX
[14:40] < thalerim> [anders]: rfs4 will go in 2.4.21-pre1
[14:41] < thalerim> err
[14:41] < thalerim> first steps to it
[14:41] < thalerim> or so
[14:41] < [anders]> thalerim: cool. I will have to keep an eye open for that..
[14:41] < [anders]> I'm running 2.4.19-ac3 at the moment.. Will hold off on the 2.4.20-pre things until close to release..
