Linuxtag - it created a lot of questions and turmoil lately, so here to clarify, the first 2002 Linuxtag mailing. /*short info*/ This years Linuxtag is from 06th june to 09th june in D-76133 Karlsruhe, Germany. It will take place at the Expo-Area Karlsruhe, and will not cost entry fees, AFAIK. the official page is at: http://www.linuxtag.org/ http://www.linuxtag.de/ (your choice, same server) the conference part features a lot of talks, two thirds are usually in german, some in english. for the exact talks shedule, check the linuxtag homepage. /*long info*/ general things: - project page: http://www.rocklinux.org/people/ripclaw/projects/de-rock-lxtag/2002/2002.html need ! more ! feedback :-) cannot find info there ? questions ? --> ripclaw ! this is also where you find the official shedule. i have taken off the entire week, and will be at karlsruhe wednesday noon. - mailing list: de-rock-lxtag has not been implemented, please use the rock-linux mailinglist for now. - accomodation: either hotel (organized by ripclaw, please give arrival & departure day+time, spending expectations, and expectation of car parking) - unless otherwise asked for, i will go for single rooms in the 40-50 euro range, breakfast included. we can get some rebate as a group, and some more without the food. or sleeping hall etc. - i know that joey@linuxtag.org (joey from debian) will do the organisation, he will tell me about cheap rate sleeping. there is also the chance of sleeping in the car, if all else fails, or at the booth (expect to be awake at 07:00h in the morning then). i`ll try to get more info regarding the cheap-sleep thing. we also have the option of room sharing, and floorspace + shower at other people`s hotel rooms, if you folks get along with each other well enough :-) - general linuxtag setup: linuxtag is free entry, with a huge hall beeing mostly occupied by commercial linux plunder^H^H^H^H^H^Hvendors. remember to bring bags for the goodies. in between these, there are "free software booths", usually a lot smaller, with less gear. last year, we had 4x4 meters, the year before 4x3 meters. i doubt we get more than the 4x4 setup this year, since we did not have many people and gear last year. expect 4 tables (two rear, one front, one side) and a few seats, maybe even a display box. (check out the linuxtag 2000 page in the rock linuxtag section for more on that, pictures from 2001 will be uploaded later the week.) we`ll see how many people we have, and will make shedules when who`s going to be at the booth. i attempt to get t-shirts finished, and will check with my accountant on how much sponsoring i can put in. t-shirts will be crew-only, unless we get enough merchandise requests and some goooooood ideas. i`ll prepay a bunch of production grade cdroms (intel source and binary base 1.6, maybe extensions) we can sell at the linuxtag. the money will go back into hardware for developers and e.g. the above mentioned t-shirts. - booth camp work: most of the work at the booth is answering questions from people who already know quite a bit of rocklinux, and sending desktop linux beginners either to debian or something useful, or filtering out good candidates and turning them to rocklinuxers. for that purpose we`ll have a few workstations with screens (rocklinux people supplied). i for example will bring a sparc with screen, either a ss10 or a u5, and some game hardware (disks, tape or such). typical demonstrations include showing people around the source tree, telling them how a build works, how e.g. to set up cross compile, how the install looks like (anyone with decent VMWare and interest to show that ?). prime candidates for demonstration this year: rock linux 1.6 and 1.7 new features, clustered build, cross compiling, ports. good desktop setups with sound and movies might also be worth a show, to get people away from thinking we`re console only. please consider the booth a non-smoking zone, and take out the trash regularly - this is not ccc, and we need to make a good impression. in most cases, you can smoke at a food stand a few meters away. - required stuff: piotr volunteered to bring along a digicam, second one would be nice. pictures will get uploaded. ripclaw will bring network basics (10/100 network switch, 8 port), cables. linuxtag may supply power-sockets, but we`ll have to bring some our own. bring your own cable binders ! if you bring hardware, make sure you are able to install it, back up all the data (transport damage ?), and report the hardware bringing to ripclaw for coordination. we can usually get 4-6 desktop systems and a few laptops into the booth, dual-head desktops report the fact that you bring extra screens ! stuff that will be urgent for us to have: - iso images of current releases, plus a secured FTP or NFS server for offering them to the network (people occasionally bring laptops to download iso`s) - cdrom burner(s) and empty cdroms (whoever brings gets money back - please announce, so we do not have 2000 empty cdroms there.) - one tape drive for dds2/3/4 if possible (backup) - one soldering iron and soldering tin for emergencies, plus assorted screwdrivers :-) - public relations work: we`ll need to go asking for sponsors a lot. make sure you know how to handle commercial people if you want to do that, and ensure you look "normal" (i.e. no suit or tie, t-shirts are ok) - basic rules: 1.) tell me what you plan to do, where and when, and make sure the others get to know that, too. this way we can save ourselves from bad surprises. 2.) i need your phone numbers, make sure you got mine. 3.) linuxtag is a publicity event with hack-value as a second rank interest. i hope i have answered the questions, if i missed something, please ask me. regards, ripclaw -- Diese E-Mail enthält vertrauliche und/oder rechtlich geschützte Informationen.
