About

The bootdisk target offers a small, bootable Linux system suitable for installation and rescue purposes. It is often used to make ISO images of other targets - like Crystal ROCK - bootable.

This system uses a two-staged boot-up: the first stage contains a minimal system and is loaded as an initial ramdisk by the boot-loader. The second stage can be loaded to another ramdisk from an arbitrary device (usually a CD/DVD). Since the second stage is completely loaded to RAM, the device it is loaded from can be removed (e.g. to change install CDs).

The bootdisk build process also creates a set of bootable floppy images, containing a Linux kernel and the first stage initial ramdisk.

Furthermore an especially small second stage is provided for systems with less than 64 MB of RAM.
